AMA (WA) in the Media

At the AMA (WA), we take pride in being a strong voice for doctors, patients, and the healthcare system as a whole. Over the past two months, the AMA (WA) has regularly been in the media, speaking up on relevant issues like the findings of the AMA’s 2026 Public Hospital Report Card. Here’s a look at some of our media appearances.

Free RSV vaccines for aged care

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath welcomed the State Government’s announcement of free RSV vaccinations for aged-care residents aged 65 and over. RSV is a leading cause of pneumonia and hospitalisation among older and immuno-compromised patients, and expanding access to vaccination helps reduce serious complications.

“Creaking” hospital system

Following the release of the 2026 Public Hospital Report Card, Dr Kyle Hoath joined Oliver Peterson to discuss the extraordinary strain currently facing Western Australia’s public hospitals. The discussion highlighted a system “creaking under the weight of long‑term demand that outpaces investment,” leaving both patients and clinicians in increasingly difficult positions.

Mental health beds concerns

Leading psychiatrists urged the WA Government to abandon a plan to divert a third of beds at a women’s mental health facility to patients awaiting aged-care placement. Dr Kyle Hoath said the Government needed to explain its contingency plans if it diverted mental health beds to other patients, as it would represent a significant and further reduction in specialist women’s mental health capacity at a time of extreme demand.

MEDICAL FORUM

Vaping crackdown

Western Australian health professionals are hopeful that amendments to the State’s Tobacco Products Control Act could have a positive impact on the overall health of the community. Dr Kyle Hoath said illegal trade in cigarettes and vapes undermines efforts made over decades to curb rates of smoking in the community.
